DIY Teacup Candles

I was never a tea drinker. No one in my family drank tea, so I didn’t drink tea, and I could never quite understand why people put little bags of stuff in a cup and then poured water on top.

Didn’t make any sense to me.

But then my mom started drinking tea, and she loved it. She said it was relaxing…she said it was the perfect way to end a long and stressful day.

So then I said, well hey…I have a whole bunch of long and stressful days…why don’t I give this a shot?

And you know what? I really liked it.

So when thinking about what to get my mom for Christmas this year, I was totally inspired by Rhiannon’s post over at Hey Gorgeous, where she made the most beautiful vintage teacup candles, and I decided I’d try making them at home.

What a cute gift right? Teacup candles with some Salted Caramel Bigelow tea to go with them. The perfect gift for any tea lover out there.

I thought it’d turn out to be an epic failure, but it was actually a huge success and they were super easy to make.

1. First you need your stuff. I ordered these two beautiful teacups on Amazon, but you can find them pretty much anywhere. I ordered a pack of wax flakes, a pack of wicks, and a pack of candle fragrances too.

Those got shipped right to my doorstep, and once they did, I was ready to do this.

2. Place one of the wicks in the teacup. I’m not sure if I was supposed to glue them down, but I crazy-glued them to the bottom of the cup anyway, to make sure they stayed in place.

Again, I’d never done this before, so this was way out of my DIY-comfort zone. Bear with me.

Okay, good…it stayed!

3. REALLY keep your wicks in place. Now if you look at Rhiannon’s post, you can see she uses these little wooden sticks that photograph beautifully. I forgot to get some of those, so I had to improvise. Joe had some zip ties handy. Close enough.

4. Melt your wax. We filled a pot with water, and then placed a measuring cup in the pot, and poured the wax flakes in the measuring cup. To make these two teacup candles, we used about 1 cup of wax flakes.

Then we turned up the heat on the pot, and began to stir. Eventually, the wax does melt, so be patient. Joe was like, super intrigued by all of this.

4. Once the wax has melted, it’ll look like a transparent liquid, and at that point, you can add in your candle fragrance. I used vanilla for mine.

5. Time to pour! Carefully (with an oven mitt, please) take the measuring cup out from the pot and pour the melted wax into the teacups.

The wax dries all white-looking, unless you use some kind of dye which is always an option, but for my first attempt, I kept it simple.

6. Then you wait. I grabbed some cute gift tags, and then Joe and I left these on the counter while we watched Star Wars.

By the time the movie was over, the candles had hardened.

7. Now you cut the wicks.

How cute are they?!?!

If you ask me, VERY.

And that’s it! I loved how easy these were to make, and they really make the perfect gift for anyone who loves tea like my momma.

Add a box of Bigelow tea and your tea-loving friend will love you forever.
