A huge thank you to Cascade for sponsoring today’s post and teaching me things I didn’t know about my dishwasher!. As always, all opinions are my own.
Alright peeps, how many of you guys use a dishwasher? Do you even DO dishes? Or are you one of the lucky ones who’s mom still does them for you? If that’s the case, enjoy it while it lasts!
I’ve been doing my own dishes for a long time now, and you know what? It’s one of the things that I hate the most on this planet.
I don’t know why, but it’s one of my least favorite chores. Ugghhhh I gotta come to terms with it though, because I have to cook occasionally so I don’t starve and die.
Thankfully my dishwasher makes things a whole lot easier for me, but I recently learned a few things about this dishwashing process that I didn’t know before. Yep, at 26, I just learned this stuff now. Better late than never!
You Don’t Have To Rinse Beforehand
Whaaaaaaat?!? Why the heck didn’t someone tell me this before? So many hours of my life WASTED, washing my dishes manually before throwing them in the dishwasher! I just found out that when you use premium detergent like Cascade Platinum, your dishwasher legit senses how dirty your dishes are, and the detergent works like super extra hard to get the dishes clean. AKA- you can skip the sink. And that’s a good thing too, because it takes about 12 gallons of water to pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. So save the planet and skip that step. Put your dishes straight in the dishwasher.
How You Load Your Dishwasher Matters
This was news to me. I thought as long as I got it all in there, everything was good to go. Apparently not, so here’s how to PROPERLY load a dishwasher. I never thought of separating my utensils. I spent years letting my spoons spoon.
You Really Ought To Clean Your Dishwasher
I guess I figured that it was already clean? I guess I thought that since it was cleaning my dishes, it was cleaning itself at the same time? I don’t know, man… this adulting thing is hard. Don’t judge me. But yea, public service announcement: you have to clean your dishwasher. Here’s how you do it.
Not All Detergent Is Created Equal
I’m the first one to admit that I’m a total bargain shopper. Joe and I get into fights about it all the time because God forbid I get the Publix brand ziplocks instead of, well, Ziplocks. I’m always looking for good deals, so my first instinct is to gravitate towards anything that’s cheaper. But in some cases, and in this case in particular, not all detergent is created equal my friends. It has something to do with the chemicals they put into this stuff. You can have a weak formula that leaves your dishes with tons of gunk on them, or you can have detergent with a strong formula that leaves your dishes nice and shiny. So if ya want them nice and shiny, check out Cascade Platinum action packs. I’ve always been a fan of the Cascade action packs but only recently did I start using the platinum packs. And yea…never going back.
So give them a try, and let me know what you think. Here’s a coupon to help you get started!
See…told you I’m always on the lookout for deals! Happy cleaning!

I would never put my dishes in the dishwasher without rinsing them first. I don’t pre-wash them but I definitely rinse them. It creeps me out to think of putting them in there with stuff all over them although I keep hearing over and over again that it’s not necessary.
Interesting info! I’ll forever feel the need to rinse before putting the dishes in though, haha. It just seems like it’s much cleaner that way!
