The title of this post seems a little off, right?
I mean yea, I feel a little weird typing those words, but if I’m being really honest, it’s the truth.
In my most recent blog income report I told you guys this was happening. I told you that I used to get TONS of traffic via Pinterest, and that ever since the new Pinterest algorithm went live, my page views had been suffering.
Well, I think it was a really good thing for me, and here’s why…
It made me realize that I can’t simply rely on popular posts
I’ve been blogging for over 4 years, and to this day, this post –> How To Be Rich In Your Twenties, has been my MOST READ POST. I get it! I guess a whole lot of people want to learn how to be rich, so this post has done tremendously well in terms of traffic generation. It was getting shared on Pinterest hundreds of times a day, and I was a happy camper. But you know what happened? Like I already said, Pinterest traffic went down and suddenly this super popular post wasn’t doing as hot as it used to which meant my blog traffic was suffering big time. But I’m glad it did, because it made me realize that I can’t just ride on the success of a few popular posts. Instead, I need to have A LOT of popular posts so that in case one of them loses momentum, my blog traffic doesn’t suffer as much. Which leads me to #2..
It made me realize that I need to keep writing great content
Seeing my traffic go down made me realize that I need to be consistently creating new content and that it needs to be awesome. You never know when a post will go viral, but you can bet your butt that it won’t go viral if you never freaking write it! I never thought How To Be Rich In Your Twenties would be shared as much as it was, so the more stuff you put out there, the higher the likelihood of generating tons of new traffic to your site. So no more writing breaks. No more relying on previous posts to bring in new readers. Write new content, people! Even if you have 100k+ page views a day.
It allowed me to bring back to life some really good content that had been lost in the archives
I have some really good posts that I wrote a couple years ago, but I hardly ever see them because they’re so old and lost in the archives! But when my traffic started dropping, I took that opportunity to go through my archives and bring back to life some of my older posts that were really great. How do you bring them back to life? Easy! You start sharing them again…you update them with new content…you can even create a new image to go along with the post…there’s so much you can do! And it’s awesome because you’ll often gain a whole lot of traffic from these older posts with half the effort that goes into creating a BRAND NEW post. I mean, you took the time to write it at some point or another, so don’t let your posts die!
It forced me to work on improving my other social media platforms
Since I was trying to increase traffic again, I realized how important my other social media platforms are. Having a great blog is fantastic, but if you don’t have strong social media platforms, you’re probably gunna struggle a bit to bring new readers to your blog. I took this time to really focus on reconnecting with my audiences on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and even Snapchat (which I’m still learning how to use – follow me @kcruz012). Heck! I even enrolled in my friend Rachel’s Instagram course in hopes of better engaging with my Instagram audience and bringing new readers to my site (and it’s totally been helping me, btw)! So I’m glad my page views went down, because when page views are up, I find that I tend to take my social media accounts for granted, and I don’t give them that much love. So I’m sorry, Facebook, I really do love you and I hope we can be friends again!
It forced me to step up my game and make my blog better
At the end of the day, my declining page views were a huge wake up call. We can be successful bloggers, but it takes a lot of work. Hard work. Work that sucks sometimes. But if you want it badly enough, you do it, and it’s amazing! I started to think big-picture again. I started thinking about the short-term and long-term plans I have for my blog. Right now I’ve been super busy promoting my new book, Corporate Survival Guide For Your Twenties, but there’s so much more I want to do on top of that! I have e-course ideas in mind, e-books, workbooks, just so many things that I want to accomplish, and that means I need to focus on making my blog better every single freaking day. I also took the time to re-read one of my FAVORITE BLOGGING BOOKS, Building a Framework from Abby over at JustAGirlAndHerBlog.com. I’ve probably read this 3 or 4 times now, but each time, I take something else from it and it gives me that motivation I need to continue putting my heart and soul into my blog.
So if you’re like me and seeing a decrease in page views, DO NOT WORRY! Instead, let that motivate you to keep hustling, and you’ll eventually see how it’s really a blessing in disguise.
