Before I had a newborn, maintaining a clean house wasn’t easy. But now that Riley’s arrived, it’s legit near impossible.
(It’s okay though because she’s so darn cute!)
Between diaper changes and putting her down for her naps, the amount of free time I have these days is super limited. Regardless, I do try to use some of that time to clean my house a bit so it doesn’t look like a tornado hit through here.
I’m not going to lie…it sometimes takes the ENTIRE day to get through this easy list, but here are the five things that I prioritize to keep my house clean and allergen free – which I’ll talk more about in just a little bit.
1. Make The Bed
If it were up to me, I’d never make my bed. Sure, it would look like a hot mess all the time, but it doesn’t normally bother me.
However, Joe HATES for the bed to be unmade, so I do try to make it for him purely out of love. I just have to keep Riley entertain for a good 5 minutes, and then my room can look like this.
Fine, it actually does look much better, and it makes me feel somewhat put together.
2. Unload The Dishwasher
This is probably my least favorite task for some reason, but every morning I try to unload the dishwasher so that the dishes don’t pile up in the sink.
I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do as our family grows because as it is, our dishwasher is constantly full! It never ends!
Not only do I have to do my laundry and Joe’s laundry, but now I have to do small human laundry too! It’s incredible how much of Riley’s clothes and how many burp cloths we go through in a week, so now I find myself doing laundry at least once every other day.
With a little one in the house, its more important than ever to keep my house clean and allergen free. That’s why I’m loving my vacuum these days along with ARM & HAMMER™’s line of products and filters that work to combat airborne and surface-prone allergies throughout the home.
For those of you who visit my blog regularly, you guys know that I have a cat that I’m obsessed with. I mean look at him – he’s obviously a model.
I love Graham to the moon and back, but dude – he sheds so freaking much! Now that him and Riley are sharing spaces in our home, I’m trying to do everything I can to reduce the amount of cat hair and other allergens she’s exposed to. That means vacuuming at least three times a week – something I used to do like once a month.
There’s so much about vacuuming that I didn’t know though. Again – not my area of expertise. Like, I didn’t even know that vacuum filters were a thing. Sorry!I thought you just plugged in the vacuum and boom! That’s it. But actually, to help reduce the allergens in your home, vacuum bags and filters need to be replaced regularly (recommended every 1-2 months for bags and every 3-6 months for filters).
Why, exactly? Well, a clogged filter can make your vacuum less powerful which reduces suction and leaves allergens and dust behind. Ehh…no bueno. But with ARM & HAMMER™, changing bags and filters is super easy to do and helps keep your vacuum running at peak performance. Believe me – if I did it, it’s easy.
FYI.. it’s also way more cost effective to replace a filter than to replace the entire vacuum so that’s a plus.
I’ve been using this ARM & HAMMER™ HEPA filter and so far, it’s been great.
ARM & HAMMER™ HEPA filters help trap particles 75 times smaller than a human hair (whaaat?!), including 99.97% of dust mite debris, animal dander, molds and pollen.
AKA- now I can feel much better about Riley hanging out around her brother, Graham.

5. Tidying Up
Because I’m home all the time now, I leave a bit of a mess whenever I’m in a room. Between my laptop and all of Riley’s stuff, there’s always tons of stuff out of place. So every night once I’ve put Riley to bed, I’ll run through my house and tidy things up. I’ll put things back in their proper place and throw out any diapers I’ve left lying around. It doesn’t take very long, but if I go just one day without doing it, things can definitely get out of control.
So that’s about it! Sure, there’s other stuff I clean up from time to time, but these are the things I try to do a little more often to keep my house in some kind of order.
What about you guys? What are your top 5 cleaning priorities? I’d love to know!
More pictures of Riley just because I like to look at them 🙂
