Down here in Florida, seasons aren’t really a thing. Leaves changing colors? Cancelled flights? Snow days that leave you stranded at home? Nope. Sorry. Don’t know anything about that!
But regardless of our amazing year-round weather, seasons still exist, and they affect our food. So here are a few of the reasons why it’s good to eat what’s in season, and trust me, it’s more important than you think.
1. Saves You Money
You don’t have to be an economist to understand some simple supply and demand. When foods are in season, there’s a lot of supply, and because they’re not that hard to get, people aren’t as willing to pay premium price. Take strawberries, for example. I’m super happy that they’re in season right now because I could eat them all day and they’re pretty cheap at the moment. I can get 3 packs of strawberries for $6.00 at Publix, and during other times of the yea, I can pay almost $4 a pack.
2. Foods Are Fresher
Seasonal produce is usually delivered to stores faster, making the seasonal foods you buy a whole lot fresher. So to make sure I’m buying the best produce, I’m constantly on the lookout for this Fresh From Florida label. It’s almost like a mini scavenger hunt at this point, but it’s my favorite way to find new products to try.
3. Foods Are Full of Flavor
Then there’s taste. Freshly harvested produce is rich in flavor given that the foods have been allowed to fully ripen and they haven’t been held for long periods of time. They’re vibrant and juicy and I don’t know about you, but that’s exactly how I like my food. I think these bell peppers are total proof of that.
4. You Support Local Farmers
There’s something to be said about supporting your local farmers, and during the spring, I love visiting farmer’s markets. I’m all about supporting small businesses and if I can give back to the men and women who are consistently harvesting the food I eat, then that makes me a happy camper. A big shout out to our Florida Farmers who make it possible for us to eat fresh produce all year. You guys rock.
5. You Get To Be Creative In The Kitchen
I could easily eat chicken and mac-n-cheese ever day til I die, so sometimes I need a little motivation to get creative in the kitchen. By making an effort to eat what’s in season, I force myself out of my culinary comfort zone and find myself trying new recipes. So far I’ve managed to make a few things for the hubby that he actually likes, and that my friends, it’s a huge win for me. The man is so damn picky!
So there you have it! Those are a few of the reasons why I love eating what’s in season. How about you guys? Do you make a conscious effort to look for seasonal produce? I’d love to know!

I also really like seasonal products. They are indeed more delicious and fragrant. But unfortunately our climatic conditions do not allow to grow vegetables and fruits all year round. Therefore, in winter I use frozen foods, in my opinion they are better than those delivered from far away.
For a healthy living, food has a unique, undefined role and the value of this food increases a lot when it is seasonal as such fruits have all the nutrients that are useful for maintaining energy and all the essentials in the body.
