Who’s ready for a few road trips this summer?! Yea, can you believe it’s just about that time? Living in Florida, it kinda feels like summer year-round, but during this season, Joe and I do the majority of our traveling.
In a few weeks we’re heading to St. Augustine, and I’m really excited about it because it’ll be my first time there. After that, we’re hoping for a weekend Disney trip, but I might change my mind because I’m dying to check out Discovery Cove. Regardless, we’ll be on the road quite a bit, so today I’m sharing some of the top things I always remember to pack on a road trip.
Lots of Water
Whenever we have a big trip planned, Joe and I like to head to the store and stock up on water! We brought home this 35 pack of Nestlé® Pure Life®, and I think it’s safe to say we’ll be nice and hydrated on our way to St. Augustine!
So why not just grab bottled water at the gas station while we’re on the road? First of all, it’s a lot cheaper to buy your water in bulk like this. These days you’ll spend more than $1 for a single water bottle at the gas station, so when we buy it at the store in a mega pack like this, we cut the costs by more than half.
Then there’s the issue of quality. Definitely don’t want to be drinking poorly filtered water, but that’s not the case with this brand. Nestlé Pure Life is committed to delivering pure, great-tasting water, and every drop is filtered through a 12-step quality process. Good stuff right there.
Books/Magazines
When you’re driving for hours at a time, there’s nothing wrong with needing a little entertainment! That’s why I always have a pile of books and magazines to choose from. I’ll typically just grab my digital reader, but every once in a while I’ll throw in a physical book that’s been sitting on my bookshelf for way too long. The last road trip we went on, we listened to a couple audiobooks too, and let me just say, I loved them. I was skeptical at first, but now I’m a big fan. That way Joe and I can both enjoy the content of a good book while he’s driving.
Sleeping Mask
One of my all time favorite things to bring on a road trip is a sleeping mask. It’s a lot easier to nap in the car with one of these babies, so I always remember to throw one in my bag.
Playlists/Podcasts
To avoid spending hours playing the “what do you want to listen to now” game, whenever we’ve got a long trip planned, I like to setup playlists ahead of time. We have to have some upbeat music so Joe doesn’t get tired driving, but I also make a list of a few podcasts to listen to as well.
Sunglasses
Living in Miami, sunnies are a must. There’s nothing more annoying than traveling in a car and having to squint the whole time because the sun’s in your face. I always pack at least two pairs of them just in case I break one of them, which I’m notorious for doing.
Camera
Road trips are the perfect opportunity to take some pretty pictures so, I always like to have my camera handy! I especially love it when we find ourselves in small towns down some semi-secluded roads – love taking photos of almost any kind of landscape.
Journal
I do a lot of my thinking in the car. But normally I can’t record my thoughts because I’m the one driving. But on road trips when Joe’s doing the majority of the driving, I can get a lot of writing done while sitting next to him. That’s why I make sure to bring a journal and a pen with me – you never know when inspiration will hit.

This post got me all sorts of excited about this summer! My fiance doesn’t have a ton of training (for once) so we’re planning on doing a lot of camping and road tripping through New York! As for podcasts, we’ve been binging My Favorite Murder which is great for long drives (for anyone that likes true crime and comedy!).
I love creating a road trip playlist, always makes the journey more fun! And keeps you motivated on the long journey if there’s a good tune to sing along to. 🙂
Great list here! I love a good road trip – enjoy!

Playlists are my #1 necessity. I went on a 8 hour roadtrip last year and after hour 3 we ran out of things to talk about. Thank god for Spotify and the radio!
