I don’t know about you guys, but lately, I’ve been coming home from work EXHAUSTED!
Now in the past, I used to just suck it up. I used to tell myself that this was my life and that I had to keep going.
But over the past few months, I’ve realized that if I want to continue to kick-ass at work, I need to make my health and well-being a priority. I need to take time to relax when I get home, time to unwind and de-stress.
Gosh, life was so much simpler when we were younger! After school, I’d go to abuela’s house and relaxing is all I had to do! We’d stop at the bakery, get some pasteliots, watch I Love Lucy, and that’s all I needed to be a happy camper.
But as an adult, it’s been a little harder. It’s been hard to relax after work. I’d get home and think about the five thousand different blog posts I had to write or projects I wanted to get started on, so relaxing wasn’t something I was totally comfortable with. So if that sounds familiar and you need some help in the relaxing department, here ten easy ways to relax after a long day at work.
Change Into Comfy Clothes
There’s nothing better than getting home from work and changing into a comfy t-shirt or my favorite pair of sweatpants. Changing out of my work clothes tells my brain that it’s time to relax, and that I can enjoy a few hours to myself, without the stress of work weighing on my shoulders.
Unplug For A Couple Hours
I’m on my phone all day long, and if I’m not on my phone, I’m on my computer. I’m answering e-mails, returning voicemails, processing paperwork, so when I get home, my brain needs a break. I’m legit sick of my phone by the time I get home, so I’ve been making an effort to unplug for a couple of hours. I’ll leave my phone in my bedroom for an hour or two and I’ll go out to the family room to do anything other than check my social media. This has helped my sanity tremendously.
Meditate/Do Yoga
After a long day at work, it’s so great to spend a few minutes meditating. Now I’m no meditating expert, but I do make it a habit of sitting on the floor for five minutes, doing nothing. I just focus on my breathing and I give thanks for the day I just had. But if you’re not a fan of meditating or you’re just not ready for it, do some yoga or at the very least, stretch. Chances are, you’ve been sitting on your butt all day long, and your body needs some stretching. Trust me, you’ll feel SO MUCH BETTER!
Read A Book
One of my favorite things to do after a long day at work is to curl up on the couch with a good book. I’m notorious for buying 15 books at a time and never getting around to reading them, so I’m trying to get through a whole bunch of new books I have sitting on my desk. This is definitely a good way to get your mind off work and to focus on something you really enjoy.
Some of the books I’m currently reading:
- Big Magic
- Crush It: Why Now Is The Time To Cash In On Your Passion
- Leave Your Mark
- You Are A Badass
- Breathe Mama Breathe
Take A Bubble Bath
I swear, I think my bath tub is my favorite part of my new house. If it wasn’t for the fact that you get all wrinkly after sitting in the tub for a while, I think I’d stay in there for hours at a time. After a super stressful day at work, walking around in uncomfortable shoes, there’s nothing like slipping into a hot bubble bath. I use two different kinds of soaking baths- eucalyptus and lavender– and both are amazing for helping me achieve a few minutes of pure relaxation.
Listen To Relaxing Music
Am I the only nerd over here who loves listening to relaxing music? Well if I am, that’s totally fine because I’m telling you, it helps me unwind SO MUCH! I’ll open up Spotify on my iPad and I’ll type in something like “Relaxation Music” or “Spa Music” and just like that, I really do feel like I’m at a spa or in the middle of a forest or at the beach somewhere totally stress-free. LOVE THIS!
Use Essential Oils
I used to give my sister so much crap for using essential oils. I thought it was a total scam. But after coming home with head-splitting migraines every day, I decided to give them a shot, and now I know why she loves them so much. Right before bed I turn on my diffuser that I fill with lavender essential oil and not only does it relax me, but it helps me fall asleep in no-time.
Light Candles
After a long day at work, I love running over to the kitchen and lighting candles. It really sets the tone for the evening and it helps me remember to take it easy. It tells my brain that the rest of the night is for unwinding and I don’t know why, but it seems to have helped with my anxiety a bit.
Do Something Crafty
I’ve never been a crafty person, but I’ve started giving crafts a shot because they help me focus on something other than work. I’ve started watercoloring and dude- it’s so soothing! So go grab yourself an adult coloring book or make yourself a sugar-scrub. Just find something crafty that you like and try doing it at least once a week.
Enjoy A Glass of Wine
The BEST way to relax after a long day at work? How about a glass of Sutter Home Pink Moscato? That’s my go-to drink lately, and uhhhhh it’s so yummy!
But if you’re not a Pink Moscato fan, no worries. Sutter Home has something for everyone with a whole bunch of different varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sangria. Joe’s a Cabernet guy, so while I’m sipping on my Pink Moscato, he’s enjoying a glass of that.
So yea, the next time you’re looking to de-stress after work, pour yourself a glass of Sutter Home Pink Moscato. It’s the perfect way to make a week night feel a little more special, and a super-easy way to relax after a long day in the office.
Any other suggestions? How do you relax after a long day? Let me know in the comments!

Yoga then wine sounds like a great idea!
I’m terrible about relaxing after a long day, but I am working on getting better, either by going to a yoga class after dinner or just putting my computer to the side and watching some show for an hour.
Great ideas! I love to do all of these! Especially yoga or a good stretch.
A glass of wine and a book are great for relaxing, as well as diffusing a relaxing essential oil blend! I also like to come home and tidy my space. I feel I can relax even better when everything is put up and clean.

Best combo: bubble baths, wine and a book all at the same time!
I’ve been meaning to check out essential oils, especially for migraines. I’ve heard peppermint is good. Is that what you use or is there something better for migraines?
Changing into comfy clothes is always the first thing I do when I get home! A glass of wine is always a good idea too 🙂
I love taking bubble baths and reading books! It’s such a great way to unwind from work. And it’s crazy how simply lighting a candle makes everything better. Oh, and a glass of rose helps too 😉
A bath and a glass of wine are my favourite ways to unwind!
Wine and a book in a detox bath is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE way to unwind. My new favorite bath is lavender epsom salts with baking soda and a little vitamin e oil. It is perfect paired with a good book (currently loving the Outlander series) and a sweet red blend.
comfy cltohes, reading and candles are my ja! Add inhot cocoa in the winter…love
Love this! Essential oils, reading, and a bubble bath always helps me relax.
xoxo, Jenny
I pretty much love every single one of this list. Wine, yoga, crafts, yep…I’m all about it.
Working out, bubble baths and having a glass of wine are my favorite ways to relax after a long day of work. I got to visit the Sutter Home Winery a few years ago while I was in CA. I have never had their moscato before. I’ll have to try it out.
Bubble Baths, Candles and a good book. Ahhh I know what I will be doing tomorrow night 🙂
Yep, I pretty much follow every one of these throughout the week at some point…except for the crafty part…I need to do better with that! Fun tips!
All I need is comfy clothes, some lit candles and a sheet mask to give myself a little pamper session after work. Granted, that doesn’t happen too often. Thanks for sharing!
A glass of wine + book is essentially heaven. HEAVEN. Does not get better than that!!!
Coming Up Roses
Oh my gosh! Essential oils are THE BEST! I’ve been using them topically for about five years now, and the things they’re good for will blow you away.
I’ve used oils like lavender, patchouli, and chamomile to treat/prevent everything from stretch marks and scars to acne. I’ve also used frankincense and oregano to get rid of moles (note: frankincense is used for seizures and scientific studies have demonstrated that it can induce apoptosis (death) of cancer cells). Long story short, they’re amazing!
I actually wrote a post about them for Dia at All The Things I Do. It has some great basic info for ladies looking for more info…

Such a great tips!
Yeah sometimes I also want to be a child again – it was so simple to relax! But for now meditation and massages work for me the best!
Seek some peace and quiet with some soothing tunes. The music you listen to influence your mood substantially. To promote calm, avoid fast and loud genres of music as it may only aggravate you and give you a headache. Slower music that you can close your eyes and breathe along with, will help to reduce your heartrate.
Changing into comfy clothes is #1 for me! I eat dinner and watch youtube, put my feet up then get ready to go to the gym. I know it seems a little counterproductive, but that is where I find most of my stress is released 🙂
